"Freshly Dead"

"Freshly Dead" is the latest in my series of paintings inspired by the Mel Brooks classic "Young Frankenstein". The difference with this project was that the frame inspired the painting not the other way around as it usually is! I had acquired this frame from a thrift store that has supplied me with a lot of interesting frames in the past. This "barn wood" style frame was originally meant to display a triptych of family photos. I didn't know what to do with it when I purchased it but it was definitely speaking to me! I kept having this nagging feeling I had seen something like this before. It finally hit me when I was compiling possible painting ideas for my Monsterpalooza display; "Young Frankenstein"!! There is a scene as you may recall about one third of the way into the film where Frederick, Inga, and Igor have discovered Victor Frankenstein's hidden lab. There is a shelf with severed heads in various states of decay. They move slowly down the line looking at each head. When they get to the space marked "Freshly Dead" they are surprised by Igor who has moved behind the shelves and placed his head in the space! What a scamp! Originally I was only going to do the portraits of the heads but I realized it also needed the labels to put a bow on this whole project!
